Week of Writing-- Coming Up with Ideas to Write About is NOT Impossible

We've all had those moments when we come up with a really cool idea for a story, only to find that someone already published a story with the exact same idea. How frustrating is that? These days, with so many stories and books popping up everywhere, it's hard to come up with an original idea.

It doesn't have to be hard, though. If authors everywhere can do it, so can you. Here's some tips to help you come up with an amazing, original idea for your story:

1. Use life experiences.  You shouldn't write books that are about your life directly. That gives away personal information, and you don't need autobiographies. You're not famous authors-- yet :). But if you have a funny experience, or a moment from your life, that you think would make a great story, you can base you story indirectly on that experience. Maya Angelou, one of the greatest American authors and poets, became famous because she based her writing on the life experiences of herself and others around her. You can do this too.

2. Read. I know you're trying to come up with an original idea, but reading and paying attention to the ideas of others can help inspire you. You can also create new books based on other ideas, if you wanted to. The original Sherlock Holmes books are amazing, but there are also several other series starring Sherlock Holmes and a variety if other characters that the other created based upon the original idea.

3. Just keep writing. If you write a lot, exercising your creativity and skill, then eventually you will create a masterpiece. You can combine two of your works to create an amazing story, or you can just write until eventually something beautiful, an amazing, original idea, will just flow from your pen. Practice makes perfect, and writing is no different. If you practice writing, you'll get really good at it and so,e day you'll be writing books left and right with your own original ideas.

Coming up with an original idea isn't hard. Well, okay. Sometimes it seems almost impossible. But it isn't impossible, because other people can do it. You are no exception. You aren't Divergent (ha ha). Coming up with an original story idea isn't Mission Impossible. So go ahead: Go crazy and get creative!
